The Garret: Writers and Publishing is a podcast for lovers of books and storytelling, hosted by Astrid Edwards.

Founded in 2017, it was dedicated to Australian writers and their craft. In 2023, it expanded focus and also interviews industry figures about what gets published (and why).

The podcast surpassed 610,000 downloads, and every interview is archived in AusLit, the definitive resource for Australian literary, print, and narrative cultures. There are curated playlists for on both fiction and non-fiction, as well as playlists with interview with First Nations storytellers and publishing industry figures. You can also browse all interviews.

The Garret received two grants from the Creative Australia (when it was the Australia Council for the Arts), as well as funding from The Copyright Agency to develop a series of interviews with diverse writers whose works should appear on the school curriculum.

The podcast partnered with writers festivals in the past, including the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival in Bali Indonesia in 2019. The Garret was shortlisted for Best Literature, Arts and Music Podcast in both the 2017 and 2019 Australian Podcast Awards.

The Garret is on hold as Astrid completes her PhD investigating the environmental responsibility of the Australian book publishing industry.
